Thanks to everyone that came out to Slowtrain for the release show, we all had a great time. It's always good to see so many friends in one place. I hope we can do it again soon.

kind words from Salt Lake City Weekly:

"Begin is the debut album by The American Shakes, a side-project of sorts for Band of Annuals’ Brent Dreiling, who wrote the vast majority of the 11 nuggets of gorgeous folk-rock found here. Although, I’m not sure you can call it a side-project when so many familiar faces took part in its birth, from a passel of Dreilings’ fellow Annuals to David Williams and Casey Prestwood. Regardless, these songs written throughout 2009 while Dreiling was spending “way more time in Salt Lake City than I had been used to,” and recorded through 2010 are finally seeing the light of day, and they were well worth the wait."

Side one ends with I Want You (She's So Heavy) and side two starts with Here Comes The Sun.

We have been busy. 2 days of vocal tracking, and sessions with both David Williams and Greg Midgley, Casey Prestwood also slayed 2 tracks with pedal steel. We have completed all tracking! (I want to repeat that, but it seems silly when typing...) I updated the song list and players in the first blog post, if you're interested in that stuff.

Thank you Jesse Ellis, Charlie Lewis, Cameron Runyan, Jake Fish, Jeremi Hanson, Trever Hadley, Greg Midgley, Kris Taylor, Wren Kennedy, David Williams, Casey Prestwood

I'm going to take a tiny break to clear the head, then we will dive into mixing.

Casino is back!

Today we added 2 guitar parts to a song called 'Gold In Her Hand.' Watch the video clip of Kris on the 12 string, the kid still has it. Somehow, we (Jake, Kris and myself) convinced Wren to play a slide guitar solo for the song... You'll have to wait to hear that though, I'm keeping a tight lid on that for now.

We'll be back at it tomorrow, I'll get more updates and maybe a song to post...

Gettin' Down!

Progress. The last few weeks have involved some acoustic guitars, vocals, falsetto vocals (yes!), bass and pedal steel tracking. I've been looking over the tracks and it seems that all we need are a few more guitar parts, vocals, a bit of keys, and CJP to add a touch of pedal steel. I can see it all coming together finally! Hopefully the progress continues over the next few weeks (I'll be in Denver with the Burning Angels the 24-28). I am hoping to find a way to upload a sneak peak when the time is right, until next time...

Tribute bands and tubas

Working on some keys today, thinking about 50's Disney movies for ideas, trying to convince Kris it's a good idea... We will see.

introduction

This is the 'Brent is slowly making a record and needs a place to type about it' blog deal. I may, or may not type about what is going on in my head at any given time.

Here is whats going on... 2009 was a slow year, I went on 3 separate 2 week tours with 3 different bands, traveled to Denver a handful of times to play steel with the Burning Angels. I spent way more time in Salt Lake City than I had been used to, and this project is a result of that. This batch of songs were mostly written between Feb and Nov '09.

Jesse Ellis offered to record the record and tracking began in November (seeing that on the screen makes me realize that Jesse is going to kill me if we don't get this wrapped up soon)

Song list and people involved (so far..)
